The district of Vaishali came in to existence on 12/10/1972.The District is located at 25° to 30° North latitude and 84° to 85° east longitude. The District is surrounded by river Ganga in south, Gandak in west. District Muzaffarpur is in north & Samastipur in East. The District is in semi tropical Gangetic plane. The state capital Patna is linked with famous Mahatma Gandhi Setu. The District is spread over 2036 sq km area. The District is said to be named after legendary King Vishal, whose heroic deeds are mentioned in epic Ramayana. Vaishali is one of the first republics of the world as democracy prevailed here as early as 6th century B.C. Mahavir was born on the outskirts of the city in 527 B.C., and lived in Vaishali till he was 22.
Infrastructure:- Vaishali is accessible to all parts of India by roads and railways. The National Highways 19, 77 and 103 runs through Vaishali and keeps it well connected with all places within and outside the state. Nearest International Airport at Patna is nearly 30 kms from district headquarter
Economy:- Almost 80% of the people in Vaishali depend on agriculture and apart from main crops like Wheat, Paddy, Maize , Oil Seed & Pulses, they also grow cash crops like potato, Chilies, tomato and other vegetables. Rearing of cattle, Fisheries, Orchards of mango & Litchi, Banana cultivation etc. are also a major source of income among the farming community. Vaishali also has many important agro.industrial units like Sudha Dairy, Raswanti.
Tourist Attraction:- The major tourist destination in Vaishali is the Ashokan Pillar, Buddha Stupa, Raja Vishal ka Garh , Vishwa Shanti Stupa and Vaishali museum.
Agro ecological situation:- Upland irrigated /RF- Fertile soils under irrigated/ rainfed. Major crops horticulture followed by maize pegion pea etc. Midland irrigated/ RF- Fertile land under irrigated/ rainfed, Most of the field crops are taken with Banana cultivation. Low land Rainfed- Fertile land under coarse paddy and green gram/ wheat. Chaur land- Based on depth of water periphery Paddy, Wheat, Middle- Paddy wheat/ Green gram, centre- coarse Paddy. Soil types of district:- Calcareous - Fine sandy loam leveled land with 0-3% slope, fertile deficient in zinc, Boron. Non Calcareous - Course sandy loam leveled with 0-3% slope, fertile deficient in zinc.
